About B & R

The Bread and Roses Collective House provides a model of cooperative living, ecological sustainability, and affordable housing situations in the heart of the city. We live in two beautiful houses in the Westcott neighborhood in Syracuse, NY. We grow most of our own vegetables June-October, and preserve many types of foods for the winter such as jams, ketchup, salsas, pickles, and tomatoes.

We have a strong commitment to social justice and community participation, with a number of our members involved with local community benefit organizations and initiatives such as Food Not Bombs, The Syracuse Peace Council, Workers’ Center of CNY, Syracuse Jail Ministries and more. We have organized and led workshops on consensus process and democratic decision making, food preservation, composting, bike fixing, making salves and lotions, natural dyes and much more. We also host a number of traveling activists, musicians and culturally creative people passing through or staying in Syracuse. With the addition of a second house to our collective on a busy neighborhood street, we hope to increase our educational and community outreach programs. The Bread and Roses Collective House is a 501(c)3 nonprofit providing a model of cooperative living, ecological sustainability, and affordable housing in the heart of the city. We live in two beautiful houses in the Westcott neighborhood in Syracuse, NY. We grow most of our own vegetables June-October, and preserve many types of foods for the winter such as jams, ketchup, salsas, pickles, and tomatoes. Come tour our gardens and share in our bounty!

We have a strong commitment to social justice and community participation, with a number of our members involved with local community benefit organizations and initiatives. Many former members have bought houses in the neighborhood, having learned the basics of homeownership while living here. We have organized and led workshops on consensus process and democratic decision making, food preservation, composting, bike fixing, making salves and lotions, natural dyes and much more. We also host a number of traveling activists, musicians and culturally creative people passing through or staying in Syracuse. We are multi-generational, with members ranging from under 10 to 77 years old.

We are committed to keeping our monthly costs affordable for our low-income members, and continuing the upkeep on our houses to be assets to the neighborhood. In a time of rising costs, this is becoming more challenging. Your support for our efforts is greatly appreciated!

LIMITED SEATING – only 25 tickets will be sold – RSVP today!

We have a limited number of work-trade positions assisting with setup the day of the event, in exchange for discount tickets. Inquire at info@breadandrosescollective.org.

Live with Us!

At Bread and Roses, we’re more than just housemates renting rooms- we are the collective! That means we share not only food and resources, but also responsibilities and decision making. All housemates contribute financially to pay our bills and share the cost of food, as well as contribute toward collective work and tasks including cooking, cleaning, gardening, construction and decision making.

We have a 3 step process that involves a written application, an informal visit and tour, and a more formal meeting with all current members. Contact us, or check out our facebook and blog if you are interested in learning more! We currently have a few openings for new members. If you are interested, get in touch by phone, email, or Facebook to schedule a time to visit.
